CLEANTH BROOKS MEDAL FOR LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT
George Core, 2015 Recipient

While the contributors and the content of The Sewanee Review have changed over time, George Core remained, steadfastly guiding the magazine and its content in what Allen Tate called “the critical program.” Two features of The Sewanee Review, which are staples of the magazine, were begun by Mr. Core — the short book reviews in the magazine and the organization of each issue around a theme. Now before reaching the table of contents, readers find short reviews in which SR contributing writers give their say on current books and sound off on topics of discussion in today’s literary world. He also started the practice of publishing themed issues, which have become a recognizable feature of the magazine. Some of the issues Mr. Core edited include those on the literature of war, Irish literature, travel, postcolonial literature, Canadian literature, and issues on the state of the printed word.
